Hybrid Superyachts

Back in 2014 I worked on the HEME Project with Pendennis Shipyard; one of the world’s leading superyacht builders. They’ve completed over 200 refits and 30 new builds in the last 25 years, and they build very large, very expensive boats.

I was the Project Manager for Pendennis’ contribution to the £1 million Technology Strategy Board funded project, the aim of which was to research and design highly optimised hybrid energy systems for marine vessels. We looked at how best to use hybrid marine solutions to deliver reductions in fuel consumption, through the use of battery storage, full hybrid vessel propulsion and complementary energy technologies. A bit like a Toyota Prius but bigger and wetter.
